What Is Carbomer 980 Powder?

The product is a cross-linked polyacrylic acid polymer, synthetic, for application in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Unlike earlier generation carbomers, it is produced with the use of a benzene-free co-solvent system (cyclohexane and ethyl acetate) which makes it safer for use in leave-on formulations and in mucous membrane contact.

This white, fluffy powder is very water absorbent. Transparent, stable gels with excellent viscosity control are obtained when dispersed in water and neutralised with bases like triethanolamine or sodium hydroxide. This “short-flow” rheology gives it a buttery, non-drip consistency, ideal for topical applications.

The cross-linked structure of the polymer permanently suspends insoluble actives, ornamental beads and pigments – overcoming formulation problems where traditional thickeners cannot do the task.
