What is Tranexamic Powder?

It is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine, known chemically as trans-4-(aminomethyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acid. In medicine, it was first used as an anti-fibrinolytic drug, but has since grown to be a gold-standard active ingredient in advanced dermatology and cosmeceuticals.

It exhibits excellent photostability and little irritation unlike typical brightening agents such as Hydroquinone or L-Ascorbic Acid. It blocks the plasminogen/plasmin pathway and hence blocks inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins that induce melanogenesis.

This novel method of action is directed at resistant hyperpigmentation, melasma and post inflammatory erythema on a cellular level and not via surface exfoliation. Its combined effect of lowering melanin synthesis and relaxing irritation makes it perfect for sensitive skin compositions.

The substance is structurally resistant across a broad pH range (3.0–8.0) and thermally stable, thus it may be used in formulation development without the need for encapsulation.

The substance is a white, crystalline powder, odourless. It is freely soluble in water and glacial acetic acid, but is nearly insoluble in acetone and ethanol.

It has a melting point > 280°C with breakdown, which means it has excellent thermal stability during hot-process production. This permits incorporation into a variety of manufacturing procedures without worry about deterioration.

It is different from other depigmenting chemicals in that it is very resistant to light, heat and oxidation. There is no need for encapsulation to retain effectiveness, which leads to lower formulation complexity and expense.

The component is bioactive at different pH conditions hence compatible with both acid and alkaline base formulations. It does not discolour in storage and does not create instability in formulations.
